Red gems I used for my Lae’zel cosplay

Placement of the gems, with some painterstape, before painting the armor and gluing the gems on (with superglue in the end, after paint)

For my Lae’zel cosplay, I needed various shapes and sizes of red gems. These are the ones I ended up using!

Since I sometimes get questions about what gems I used on my Lae’zel cosplay armor, I thought I’d make some notes about it. And why not put these on my blog so everyone who’s working on a Lae’zel cosplay can find these too?

If you are using my Lae’zel patterns and tutorial, you will see me using some store bought acrylic gems. It was just too much work for me at that time (next to crafting the whole cosplay) to resin cast the gems for this cosplay by myself. So I was super happy that these gems already excist! But it was a puzzle which ones I needed and how many. So I made a little list.

I used a total of 35 acrylic gems on my EVA foam armor for Lae’zel. Most were from Allstarco (love their gems!) but a few were from my old stash. Be sure to check the notes to know where I used gems from my stash, and how they could be substituted for the Allstarco gems.

Tiny gems on the Worbla details on Lae’zels skirt

So this is my list of gems that I used for Lae’zel:

Teardrop facetted gems

18X13 mm 3/4″ x 1/2″
Packed per 30 pieces

For Lae’zel I used 6 pieces in total:
Shoulders/arms: 2
Breastplate: 3
Belt: 1

Notes: On the front of the breastplate, there is a part where there’s 3 teardrop gems together. I used 2 random thinner ones from my stash, but you can also just use 3 of the same ones.

Round facetted gems

15mm or 19/32″
Packed per 40 pieces

For Lae’zel I used 10 pieces in total:
Shoulders/arms: 2
Breastplate: 6 (optional: 2 for the back (see notes))
Legs: 2

Notes: On the back of the breastplate, I also used 2 smaller facetted round gems from my stash. You could use bigger ones too. Or use the mini oval cabochons for the back of the breastplate.

Mini oval cabochon

14x10mm or about 7/16″ x 19/32″
Packed per 40 pieces at the time when I bought them. Now I couldn’t find that specific product, but the one I linked is a bigger set of 120 pieces in assorted colours. It’s a bit much to buy that whole set just for 1 red gem though. But I must say, these assorted sets are really pretty and satisfy my ‘shiny things hoarding dragon’ heart…
But, Allstarco, please bring back these gems in just red <3

For Lae’zel I used 1 piece* in total:
Breastplate: *Optional: 2 for the back
Belt: 1

Notes: It’s possible to use these mini oval gems also for the two tiny gems on the back of the breastplate. I know they are not round, but oval will look nice too. Since the actual gems that I used from Allstarco aren’t available currently in just that specific colour, you could also substitute it by any gems in that sice you can find in a craft store.

Medium oval cabochon

5x18mm or about 1″ x 3/4″
Packed per 20 pieces

For Lae’zel I used 9 pieces in total:
Shoulders/arms: 2
Breastplate: 1
Hips: 4
Legs: 2

Large oval cabochon

40x30mm
Packed per 4 pieces

For Lae’zel I used 3 pieces in total:
Breastplate: 1
Legs: 2

Round cabochon

25mm or 1″ diameter
Packed per 12 pieces

For Lae’zel I used 6 pieces in total:
Shoulders/arms: 4
Legs: 2

Happy crafting 😀

I hope this list can help a bit while you are working on your epic Lae’zel armor!
